Fall exterior painting in Houston: what it costs in 2026 and why autumn works

Painting the outside of a typical 2,000 sq ft one-story home in the Houston area costs about $2,400–$4,200 if it is mostly brick (siding and trim painted) and $4,200–$7,600 if it is all siding, in Homestimo's October 2026 pricing. Fall is a practical time to do it: the National Weather Service lists Houston's normal November high and low at about 73°F and 52°F.
Houston summers are hard on exterior paint and hard on painting crews. Once the worst of the heat breaks, a lot of homeowners start looking at peeling trim and faded siding and asking two questions: what will it cost, and is it too late in the year? Here are Homestimo's current Houston-area ranges and what to check before you book a fall exterior job.

What these ranges include
- Included: pressure washing, scraping, caulking, two coats, soffits, fascia and window trim, with paint supplied by the pro. Materials include about 8.25% sales tax, the typical combined rate in Harris County.
- Not included: wood rot repair. Fascia boards, window sills and the bottom of siding near the ground are good places to check for soft wood; repairs are priced separately once the painter sees them.
What moves your price the most
- Brick vs. siding. The outside material changes the price more than anything else. On a mostly brick house, only the gables, trim and any siding get paint; an all-siding house of the same size can cost close to twice as much.
- Stories. Two-story homes need more ladder work and more wall area, which is why the ranges jump between the one-story and two-story rows. For how much the second story adds inside one suburb, see Katy exterior painting costs by ZIP code.
- Condition. Heavy peeling, failed caulk and rot add prep time before any paint goes on.
- Extras you add. Doors, shutters, a fence or a garage door are usually priced on top. If you also want a new front door color, see four dark front door colors and what a door repaint costs.
Why fall works for exterior paint in Houston
Exterior paint has three weather enemies: temperatures that are too low, moisture on the surface, and rain or dew before the paint has dried. In Houston, fall usually handles the first one easily.
- Temperature. The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office lists the normal November high at 72.6°F and the normal low at 51.5°F for the City of Houston. Sherwin-Williams says some of its newer exterior latex lines can be applied at temperatures as low as 35°F, while traditional latex paints need it warmer. Check the label of the product your painter will use.
- Rain. The same Sherwin-Williams guidance says to wait at least a day after a heavy rain and to paint only on a dry surface. A good fall schedule has a little slack for wet days.
- Dew. Cool fall nights bring dew. Sherwin-Williams notes most products need at least 4 hours of dry time before moisture settles on them, so in fall it helps to start after the morning dew has dried and to finish early enough in the afternoon for the paint to dry before evening.
The practical takeaway: fall is not too late in Houston, but the useful painting hours per day are shorter than in spring, and wet weeks push schedules back. Booking early gives your painter room to wait for the right days instead of rushing.
Before you book a fall exterior job
- Check HOA rules. Many Houston-area subdivisions need architectural approval for exterior color changes. Repainting the same colors is often simpler, but check before you buy paint.
- Get the scope in writing: which surfaces are painted (siding, gables, soffits, fascia, trim, doors, garage door), prep steps, the paint brand and product line, sheen and number of coats.
- Ask how rot is priced. A per-board or per-foot price for repairs found during prep avoids surprises later.
- Ask about weather delays: what happens if rain or dew pushes the job, and whether the painter checks the work after it dries.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house in Houston?
For a typical 2,000 sq ft one-story home, about $2,400 to $4,200 if it is mostly brick with siding and trim painted, and about $4,200 to $7,600 if it is all siding, in Homestimo's October 2026 Houston pricing. Two-story homes cost more.
Is fall a good time to paint a house exterior in Houston?
Usually, yes. The National Weather Service lists Houston's normal November high and low at about 73°F and 52°F. Plan around rain and morning dew, and follow the temperature limits on the paint label.
How cold is too cold to paint outside?
It depends on the product. Sherwin-Williams says some of its newer exterior latex paints can be applied as low as 35°F, while traditional latex paints need warmer temperatures. Check the label of the paint being used.
Does an exterior painting quote include wood rot repair?
Often not. Homestimo's Houston ranges include pressure washing, scraping, caulking and two coats, but not rot repair. Ask your painter how repairs found during prep will be priced.
Why does a brick house cost less to paint than a siding house?
On a mostly brick home, only siding, gables and trim are painted, so there is much less surface to prep and coat. The outside material changes the price more than anything else.
