Spooky but classy: 4 dark front door colors for Halloween (and what a door repaint costs in Houston)

The easiest Halloween-ready front door colors are the ones that still look good in March: soft black, charcoal brown, deep moss green and oxblood red-brown. In Homestimo's Houston pricing, a front door adds about $70–$130 to a full exterior repaint; as a stand-alone job, one Sugar Land painter lists exterior doors at $120–$180 each, and a Katy door specialist lists $349 for a full refinish of a standard door.
A dark front door is the one Halloween upgrade that doesn't come down on November 1. Orange pumpkins and mums pop against it in October, a wreath reads well against it in December, and it still looks deliberate the rest of the year. Here are four "spooky but classy" color families, which Houston-area houses each one suits, and what to check before you paint.
Four dark door colors at a glance
| Color family | A 2026 pick to sample | Looks best on | Pair with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft black | Any soft, warm black | Red or orange brick, white siding | White trim, brass |
| Charcoal brown | Silhouette (Benjamin Moore AF-655) | Cream brick, limestone, stucco | Bronze, warm white |
| Deep green | Midnight Garden (Dunn-Edwards DE5657) | Gray, white or painted brick | Black lanterns, natural wood |
| Oxblood | Warm Mahogany (Glidden PPG1060-7) | Cream stucco, stone, tan brick | Aged bronze, terracotta pots |
Swatches are approximate. Color descriptions from the American Coatings Association, Industry Colors of the Year 2026. Pairings are our suggestions.
1. Soft black: the classic
Black is the most "Halloween" of the four and the easiest to live with afterward. On red or orange brick, a black door with white trim looks crisp, and brass or gold hardware keeps it from feeling stark.
- Choose a soft black. Blacks lean blue, green or brown. Next to warm brick, a slightly warm black usually looks richer than a cool blue-black.
- Sheen: semi-gloss or gloss is typical for doors because it wipes clean, but it also shows every dent and brush mark. A smooth, well-prepped door matters more with a dark gloss.
2. Charcoal brown: softer than black
Benjamin Moore's 2026 pick, Silhouette, is described as rich espresso with notes of charcoal. On a door it reads almost black from the street and warm brown up close, which suits cream brick, limestone and stucco fronts, where pure black can look harsh against pale masonry.
- Hardware: oil-rubbed bronze or aged brass work better than chrome.
- Test it in shade and sun. Dark browns can look nearly black on a covered porch and much warmer in direct afternoon sun.
3. Deep green: moody, and good all year

Dunn-Edwards' Midnight Garden is described as a deep, muted green with earthy undertones that works on exteriors as well as interiors. It is moody enough for Halloween with a few heirloom pumpkins, and in spring it simply looks like a well-chosen garden color.
- Best on: gray, white or painted brick and white siding. On red brick, a deep green can fight the red; sample it against your actual brick first.
- Lighting: black lanterns and warm bulbs keep green from looking flat at night, when trick-or-treaters actually see it.
4. Oxblood: the warm, dramatic option

A deep red-brown is the most fall-looking of the four. Glidden's 2026 pick, Warm Mahogany, is described as a rich, warm-toned red. It sits well on cream stucco, stone and tan brick, and terracotta pots and rust mums repeat the color without more paint.
- Interior pick, exterior use: Warm Mahogany is presented for walls and trim, especially in bedrooms and kitchens. For a front door, ask the paint counter to mix the color in an exterior door-and-trim product, and test the sample that was mixed for you.
- Fading: strong reds and browns on a door in full afternoon sun can fade faster than neutrals. A covered porch helps.
Before you paint a door dark in Houston
- Sun and heat. Dark colors absorb more heat. If your door faces west or south with no porch roof, check the door maker's finishing instructions first. Therma-Tru's warranty, for example, says its PVC glass frames are not recommended for dark paint in direct sun.
- Storm doors. A full-glass storm door in front of a sunny dark door can trap heat. Ask the door or storm-door maker before you commit.
- HOA rules. Many Houston-area subdivisions have deed restrictions on exterior colors. Check whether a door color change needs architectural approval before you buy paint.
- Door material. Wood, steel and fiberglass doors each need the right primer and an exterior-rated paint. Tell the paint counter what your door is made of.
- Before October 31. Check the paint label for the minimum temperature and the time before the door can be closed and before anything is hung on it. Avoid adhesive hooks or a heavy wreath on fresh paint until the label's cure time has passed.
What painting a front door costs in Houston

| Entry door, in a full exterior job | $70–$130 | Homestimo pricing model (Houston) |
| Exterior door, per door | $120–$180 | The Proud Paintbrush, Sugar Land |
| Full refinish, standard 80 in. door* | $349 | Texas Door Painting, Katy |
| Garage door, in a full exterior job | $140–$260 | Homestimo pricing model (Houston) |
| Garage door, per door | $250–$600 | The Proud Paintbrush, Sugar Land |
*Listed as a fall special; includes removing failed clear coat. Homestimo rows are per-door add-ons inside a whole-house exterior estimate.
The gap between the rows is mostly setup. Inside a full exterior job, the crew is already there with ladders, drop cloths and paint, so the door is a small add-on. A door on its own carries the whole trip, and a full refinish (stripping old finish, repairs, both faces and edges) costs more than a fresh coat over sound paint. If you are planning other exterior work this fall, adding the door to that job is usually the cheaper route. Getting a door quote
- Ask what's included: both faces and edges, the frame and trim around it, and whether hardware is removed or masked.
- Ask about the product: brand, exterior door-and-trim line, sheen, and number of coats.
- Ask about timing: how long the door has to stay open or ajar while it dries, and whether the painter comes back to check it.
- Already have a quote for a bigger exterior job? Upload it to Quote Compare to see how it compares with a fair range for your home. For more fall color ideas indoors, see our fall paint color palettes.

Frequently asked questions
What color front door is best for Halloween?
Dark colors that still work after October: soft black, charcoal brown, deep green or a deep red-brown such as oxblood. Orange pumpkins and mums stand out against all four.
How much does it cost to paint a front door in Houston?
Added to a full exterior repaint, about $70 to $130 per door in Homestimo's Houston pricing. As a stand-alone job, one Sugar Land painter lists exterior doors at $120 to $180 each, and a Katy company lists $349 for a full refinish of a standard door (October 2026).
Can you paint a fiberglass or steel front door a dark color?
Usually, but check the door maker's finishing instructions first, especially for doors in direct sun or behind a full-glass storm door. Use a primer and exterior paint suited to the door material.
Do I need HOA approval to change my front door color?
It depends on your subdivision. Many Houston-area HOAs have deed restrictions on exterior colors, so check your rules or ask the architectural committee before painting.
Is Glidden Warm Mahogany an exterior paint color?
It is presented mainly for interior walls and trim, especially bedrooms and kitchens. For a front door, have the color mixed in an exterior door-and-trim product and test that sample.
Color names and codes are from each brand's 2026 color of the year announcement, as compiled by the American Coatings Association (linked above, checked October 2026); matching them to door colors is Homestimo's suggestion, not the brands'. Images are concepts, not photos of the actual paint; always test a real sample. The per-door range inside a full exterior repaint is from Homestimo's Houston pricing model; stand-alone door prices are from the two local companies linked above, checked October 2026. All are planning ranges, not contractor quotes.
