Booking a painter before the holidays? 5 questions to ask about the quote

Before you book a painter for the holidays, ask five things: the start and finish dates, exactly which surfaces are included, how many coats of which paint, who moves the furniture and cleans up, and the payment schedule. In Homestimo's October 2026 Houston pricing, painting the walls of the rooms guests usually see (living room, dining room, hallway and one guest bedroom) in a 2,000 sq ft home runs about $1,500–$2,400, and $2,500–$4,200 with ceilings, trim and doors.
Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, and Christmas is four weeks later. If you want the living room, the hallway or the guest room repainted before people arrive, November is when painters' calendars fill up, and quotes get written quickly.
Last week we covered what to check in a rushed exterior quote. This guide is about the inside of the house: the job happens while you live there, and the deadline is a dinner table full of guests. These are the five questions we would ask before signing, with Homestimo's Houston numbers so you can see what each answer is worth.
1. When can you start, and when will you be done?
Get both dates on the quote. The Federal Trade Commission lists an estimated start and completion date among the things a written contract should include.
Then work back from the holiday, not from the last brushstroke. Fresh paint is dry to the touch quickly, but it is not ready for a full house right away. Benjamin Moore says walls can take light use after 24 hours, but advises against pushing furniture against them for the first seven to ten days, and says full cure takes about 30 days. Its FAQ gives a full cure of 14 days for one of its premium interior lines, so ask your painter which product they use and what its data sheet says.
In practice, that means:
- Thanksgiving (Nov. 26): aim to have the painting finished by about November 16–19, so sofas, sideboards and extra chairs can go back against the walls.
- Christmas (Dec. 25): aim for about December 15–18.
Also ask what happens if the start date slips. A good answer is specific: a backup date, or a plan to finish the rooms your guests will use first.
2. Which rooms and surfaces are included?
"Paint living areas" can mean walls only, or walls, ceilings, baseboards, door frames and doors. That difference is often larger than the difference between two painters. Here is how Homestimo's Houston range moves for the same four rooms (living room, dining room, hallway and one guest bedroom in a 2,000 sq ft home, fair condition, two coats):
| Scope | Labor | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Walls | $1,200–2,000 | $1,500–2,400 |
| +Ceiling | $1,600–2,700 | $2,000–3,200 |
| All | $1,950–3,600 | $2,500–4,200 |
"All" adds ceilings, trim and baseboards, and doors. Labor is the same job with you buying the paint; the rest of the total is paint and materials. Source: Homestimo pricing model, October 2026.
For the whole house, the same home runs about $4,200–$5,900 for walls only and $7,800–$12,500 with ceilings, trim and doors.
Ask the painter to list the rooms by name and the surfaces in each. Two more lines worth asking about: are closets included, and how are nail holes and dings handled? Small patching is usually part of normal prep, but larger drywall repairs are often priced separately, so ask for that price in writing before work starts.
3. How many coats, and which paint?
Our ranges assume two coats. If you are changing color a lot, such as going from a deep red dining room to a warm white, the walls may need primer or a third coat. Inside, our model adds 10–20% for that: the walls of those four rooms move from $1,500–$2,400 to about $1,650–$2,900.
Ask for the product line and sheen for each surface in writing (for example, which finish goes on walls, which on trim and doors), and ask the crew to leave the leftover paint labeled by room. Touching up a scuff after the holidays is much easier when you know exactly what is on the wall.
4. Who moves the furniture, and who cleans up?
This is the question that matters most when you are living in the house. Homestimo's room pricing already includes a set-up, protection and cleanup charge per job. Having the painter move furniture adds about 5–10% in our model: the full four-room job above goes from $2,500–$4,200 to about $2,600–$4,600, and walls only for the whole house from $4,200–$5,900 to about $4,400–$6,500.
Get the answers on paper:
- Who empties shelves, takes down pictures and curtains, and puts everything back?
- Are floors and furniture covered, and is the work area cleaned up at the end of each day?
- Which rooms will be off limits on which days? If the dining room is the last room, that is a problem on November 25.
5. What is the payment schedule?
The FTC advises against paying the full amount up front, notes that some states limit how much a contractor can ask for as a down payment, and says never to make the final payment until the work is done and you are satisfied with it. Our rush-quote guide covers deposit size in more detail.
For a holiday job, tie the final payment to a walkthrough. Walk the rooms together in daylight, mark misses with painter's tape, and pay the balance once those are fixed. A crew heading to its next holiday job has every reason to want the walkthrough quickly; agreeing on it in the quote makes it part of the job.
A quick example
Say a quote reads: "Paint living, dining, hall and guest room: $3,900." If that is walls only, it sits well above the $1,500–$2,400 range for those rooms, so ask what is in it. If it includes ceilings, trim and doors, it falls inside the $2,500–$4,200 range. Same price, two very different answers, which is why question 2 comes before the price.
If your home was built before 1978, add one more question: is the company lead-safe certified? Our model adds 10–20% to interior work in older homes for the extra containment and cleanup. About a quarter of Houston-area homes were built before 1978.
Before you sign
- Ask every painter to quote the same rooms and surfaces, so you can compare like with like.
- Make sure the start date, finish date and walkthrough are written in.
- Already have a quote? Upload it to Quote Compare. It reads the quote, compares the total with a fair range for your home and lists what looks missing, free. Or get a free estimate for your own address, with labor and materials shown apart.

Frequently asked questions
How long before Thanksgiving should interior painting be finished?
Aim to finish about a week to ten days before guests arrive, around November 16 to 19 for Thanksgiving on November 26. Benjamin Moore advises against pushing furniture against freshly painted walls for the first seven to ten days.
How much does it cost to paint a living room, dining room, hallway and guest room in Houston?
In Homestimo's October 2026 Houston pricing, the walls of those four rooms in a 2,000 sq ft home cost about $1,500 to $2,400, and about $2,500 to $4,200 with ceilings, trim and doors. Labor alone is about $1,200 to $2,000 for walls only.
Do painters move furniture?
Some do and some do not, so ask. In Homestimo's model, having the painter move furniture adds about 5 to 10 percent. Get in writing who empties shelves, takes down pictures and puts everything back.
When should I make the final payment to a painter?
The FTC says never to make the final payment until the work is done and you are satisfied with it. A walkthrough with the painter, with any misses marked and fixed, is a simple way to decide when that is.
Prices are Homestimo's Houston-area planning ranges (pricing updated October 2026) for a 2,000 sq ft one-story home with 8 ft ceilings and walls in fair condition, not contractor quotes. Drying and furniture guidance is from Benjamin Moore's published advice; contract and payment guidance is from the Federal Trade Commission, both checked October 2026.
