How much does it cost to paint a hallway in Houston? 2026 prices for halls, entries and stair walls

Repainting the walls of a typical hallway in a 2,000 sq ft Houston-area home costs about $450–$800 in 2026, and the two-story wall along a staircase or foyer about $900–$1,550, paint and labor included, based on Homestimo's pricing. A hallway plus a stair wall with ceilings and trim runs about $1,450–$2,500; for scuff-prone halls, a mid-tone color in an eggshell finish holds up best before holiday guests arrive.
Hallways, the entry and the wall along the stairs take more knocks than any room in the house: suitcases, strollers, the dog, kids' backpacks, and in late November a stream of guests carrying dishes. They are also the first thing people see when you open the door. This guide covers what those spaces cost to repaint in the Houston area in 2026, why a narrow hallway costs about as much as a bedroom, which homes have the expensive stair wall (we counted), and which colors and finishes hide scuffs.
Hallway, entry and stair wall prices in Houston (2026)
Homestimo's 2026 Houston-area pricing for a 2,000 sq ft home with 8 ft ceilings, walls in fair condition, two coats, painter supplies the paint:
| Job | Walls | All |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hall | $450–800 | $550–1,000 |
| 2 halls | $750–1,200 | $950–1,650 |
| Stair | $900–1,550 | $1,050–1,850 |
| 1+stair | $1,150–1,950 | $1,450–2,500 |
| 1+room | $900–1,500 | $1,300–2,200 |
"All" = walls, ceiling and trim. "Stair" is the two-story wall along a staircase or open foyer (about 120 sq ft of floor, walls about 16 ft high). "1+stair" is one hallway plus that stair wall; "1+room" is an entry hall that opens into a living room, the usual layout in one-story Houston homes. A big light-to-dark change adds about 10–20% (one hallway's walls: $500–$900). If you buy the paint yourself, the painter's labor for one hallway's walls is about $350–$650.
Why a skinny hallway costs as much as a bedroom
Painters price wall area, not floor area. A typical hallway in our model is about 18 ft by 4.5 ft: only 80 sq ft of floor, but about 45 ft of wall around it. A 12 by 11 ft bedroom has almost the same wall run (about 46 ft), so both come to roughly 300 sq ft of wall at 8 ft ceilings. Add the fixed part of every job (moving things, covering floors, taping, cleanup: about $150–$300) and a hallway lands at $450–$800, the same as a bedroom in our room-by-room prices.
Hallways also have more cutting-in per square foot: door casings every few feet, light switches, often a return air grille or a thermostat. That is why adding trim to a hallway matters more than in a bedroom. The practical takeaway: a hallway booked by itself carries the whole setup cost, while a hallway added to rooms you are already painting shares it, so it costs noticeably less.
The stair wall: where two-story homes pay more

A wall that runs up a staircase or a two-story foyer is about twice as tall as a hallway wall, and the painter has to work from extension ladders, a ladder over the stairs or a plank. Homestimo prices it as double-height wall with a 25–35% height adjustment, which is why the stair wall alone runs about $900–$1,550, twice a hallway.
How likely is your home to have one? We counted stories in 2026 county appraisal records for about 1.9 million Houston-area single-family homes (Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston and Liberty counties). Across homes with stories on record, 40% have two or more stories, but it swings hard by ZIP:
| ZIP | 2+ story | Median size |
|---|---|---|
| 77005 | 87% | 3,460 sq ft |
| 77382 | 73% | 2,740 sq ft |
| 77494 | 61% | 2,990 sq ft |
| 77433 | 60% | 2,670 sq ft |
| 77449 | 45% | 1,890 sq ft |
| 77084 | 40% | 1,960 sq ft |
| 77012 | 6% | 1,170 sq ft |
77005 Houston (West University area), 77382 Spring (The Woodlands area), 77494 Katy, 77433 Cypress, 77449 Katy, 77084 Houston (west), 77012 Houston (east). So in much of Katy, Cypress, Spring and the inner-loop ZIPs, the question is not "how much is the hallway" but "how much is the hallway plus the stair wall."
Colors that hide scuffs (and still look right at 5:30 pm)
Many hallways get little daylight, and since the clocks fell back on Nov. 1 Houston's sun sets around 5:30 pm, so most of the time you see an entry under ceiling lights. That favors colors with some warmth and enough depth to hide hand marks. Three directions that work, with one example each from Benjamin Moore's color pages (LRV is light reflectance value, 0 for black, 100 for white):
- Soft warm white for a dark, windowless hallway that needs every bit of light: Swiss Coffee OC-45, LRV 81.91, which Benjamin Moore describes as a white with "just the right amount of warmth." It brightens best but shows scuffs most, so it depends on a washable finish (below).
- Warm greige for long hallways and landings: Revere Pewter HC-172, LRV 55.05, a gray-beige between warm and cool. A mid-tone like this hides gray scuff marks and fingerprints far better than white and still reads light.
- Deep blue-green for a stair wall or the lower half of an entry: Newburg Green HC-158, LRV 10.58, which Benjamin Moore calls "a captivating shade of teal." Dark colors hide marks well; on a two-story stair wall, check the quote for the extra coat a big color change usually needs.

Always test a real sample on your own wall, next to the light you actually use. Our guide to colors and room light explains why the bulbs matter as much as the window.
The finish matters more than the color
In Benjamin Moore's sheen guide, eggshell is called easy to clean and suited to most of the home "including family rooms and hallways"; satin offers better stain resistance and durability than lower sheens; pearl and satin are listed for high-traffic walls. It also warns that flat paint is a poor fit for high-traffic areas because stains are harder to remove and repeated cleaning can burnish (polish) the surface. Its Regal Select matte is described as withstanding frequent washing in hallways and family rooms.
- Ask what sheen is in the quote. Quotes often don't name the sheen at all. For a hallway or stair wall, ask for eggshell (or a washable matte) and get the product name in writing.
- Higher sheen shows wall flaws. If your hallway has patched drywall or uneven texture, a satin finish will show it under raking light; eggshell is the usual compromise.
- Trim and doors: semi-gloss is the usual choice and the easiest to wipe.
Painting before Thanksgiving: usable in a day, not scrub-proof for a month
Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26. A hallway is usually a one-day job, so there is still time. But know what "dry" means. Benjamin Moore's care guide for freshly painted walls says walls are typically dry in one to two hours and the space can be used lightly after 24 hours, but the paint is not fully cured for about 30 days; it says to wait at least 30 days before cleaning, to keep furniture off the walls for the first 7 to 10 days, and to avoid abrasive sponges such as Magic Erasers.
- For a cured wall by Thanksgiving you would have needed to paint by about Oct. 27. That has passed, so plan for guests on a wall that is dry but still soft.
- For Christmas (Dec. 25), painting by about Nov. 25 gives the 30 days.
- If a guest's suitcase scuffs the new wall, dab it gently with a damp cloth and mild soap, or touch it up with leftover paint. Ask the painter to leave a labeled can of each color and sheen; it is the cheapest insurance in the job.
- Book soon. November calendars fill up; see five questions to ask a painter before the holidays.
Worked example: entry, landing and stair wall in a Katy two-story

Take the typical home in Katy ZIP 77494: about 2,990 sq ft, two stories (61% of homes there are), built around 2009, so no lead-paint rules apply. The owner wants the downstairs entry hall, the upstairs landing hall and the stair wall repainted before the holidays, walls and trim, with an eggshell finish on the walls:
- Painter supplies the paint: about $1,750–$3,100.
- Labor only (you buy the paint): about $1,400–$2,600, so paint and supplies are roughly $350–$500 of the total.
- Big light-to-dark change throughout (say, white to a deep teal): about $1,900–$3,600.
Compare a one-story home of about 2,000 sq ft (the typical size in 77084 or 77449): an entry hall that opens into the living room comes to about $900–$1,500 for the walls, and there is no stair wall to pay for. For exterior prices in the same Katy ZIPs, see Katy house painting costs by ZIP.
Older homes cost more: if your home was built before 1978, painters must follow the EPA's lead-safe work rules, which adds about 10–20%. About a third of Harris County homes were built before 1978; check yours in our 1978 guide.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to paint a hallway in Houston?
About $450 to $800 for the walls of a typical hallway in a 2,000 sq ft home, or $550 to $1,000 with the ceiling and trim, paint and labor included (2026 planning ranges). Adding the hallway to rooms you are already painting costs less because the setup is shared.
Why does painting a stairwell cost more?
The wall along a staircase or two-story foyer is about twice as tall as a hallway wall and has to be painted from extension ladders or planks over the stairs. In Houston that wall alone runs about $900 to $1,550.
What paint finish is best for a hallway?
Eggshell is the common choice: Benjamin Moore describes it as easy to clean and suited to hallways. Satin is more stain resistant but shows wall flaws; flat paint is hard to clean and can burnish when scrubbed.
Can I paint my hallway right before guests arrive?
Yes, walls can be used lightly after about 24 hours, but Benjamin Moore says paint takes about 30 days to cure and recommends waiting that long before cleaning. Keep a labeled can of leftover paint for touch-ups instead of scrubbing new paint.
Prices are 2026 planning ranges for the Houston area from Homestimo's pricing model (typical hallway about 80 sq ft and stairwell about 120 sq ft of floor in a 2,000 sq ft home unless noted, 8 ft ceilings, walls in fair condition, two coats, painter supplies the paint unless noted), not contractor quotes. Story counts are Homestimo's analysis of 2026 county appraisal rolls (Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty; single-family homes; ZIPs with at least 100 homes).
